Fall is one of the most exciting seasons for little minds. From colorful leaves and crisp autumn air to pumpkins and pine cones, there are endless opportunities to turn everyday moments into meaningful learning experiences. The best fall activities for preschoolers encourage children to explore the world around them while simultaneously building early learning skills that they will use throughout their education.
1. Fall Nature Walk
South Florida doesn’t experience fall like its northern neighbors, but there is still plenty to enjoy outside during autumn! Taking a walk out into nature and exploring the seasonal change of fall is a good time for not only little ones, but everyone involved! It provides a break throughout the day and gives children an opportunity to concentrate on a task at hand, develop their hand-eye coordination, as well as their observation skills.
Items You Will Need
- A collection bag
- An optional list of items for them to find
- Keen little hands and eyes
What To Do
Go out into your neighborhood or a nearby forest and begin collecting different items out in nature, such as different colored leaves, some different rocks, a pretty flower, whatever they can find and takes their interest.
Once they have collected their items, have them sort the items into different categories. The categories could include color, size, weight, and more.

2. Alphabet Pumpkins

Items You Will Need
- Different color markers
- A piece of paper
- Pencil crayons
What To Do
- Draw 26 pumpkins on a piece of paper, have them going in rows
- Together, you and your child can write the letters of the alphabet in each pumpkin
- Once finished, you will call out different letters, and your child will have to identify which pumpkin holds them
- When they identify the correct pumpkin, have them colour it in with a pencil crayon

3. Foil Fall Tree Art
One thing that immediately comes to mind when thinking of fall is the leaves changing color. And while we don’t see nearly as much of that in South Florida, children can still use their imaginations! Why not make it into a fun art and craft for you and your little one while also helping them build some early learning skills?
Items You Will Need
- Paint in various autumn colours
- Aluminium foil
- Paper
- A paper plate
What To Do
- Have your preschooler select a few different colour paints
- Pour the selected paints onto a paper plate
- Take a sheet of aluminium foil and roll it into balls, as many balls as you have selected colors
- Take your handmade “paintbrush” and begin painting!

- Fine motor skills when holding the aluminum foil paintbrush
- Coordination of moving between the paper plate and piece of artwork
- Cause and effect of what happens when they press hard with the foil versus lighter
4. Fall Color Sorting Sensory Bin
This Fall color sorting sensory bin is a wonderful hands-on fall activity for preschoolers to explore colours, textures, and fine motor skills through play. Children love scooping, digging, squeezing, and sorting the soft pom poms and fabric leaves while talking about the beautiful colours of fall. Best of all, there is no right or wrong way to play, making it a relaxing activity that encourages curiosity, creativity, and independent exploration.
Items You Will Need
- An assortment of different colored pom poms (red, brown, orange, yellow, green)
- A plastic tub or container to put everything in
- Cut out fabric leaves
- Plastic bug tongs or tweezers
What To Do
No instructions for this one! Add everything into your big container, set it onto the floor, and let your little one have fun playing and exploring. If you want, you could have your little one arrange the pom poms into their different colors to build color recognition skills.

- Language and communication with describing their actions such as digging, mixing, or squeezing

5. Pumpkin Seed Math
For this activity, you will need to open and gut your pumpkin. Scooping out the pumpkin seeds can be a fun sensory experience that your preschooler will likely enjoy. Once you have cleaned and dried the seeds, they become the perfect hands-on learning tool for introducing early math concepts.
Tip: If scooping out your own pumpkin seeds sounds like too much of a hassle or is too messy, buying pre-scooped pumpkin seeds will do.

- Pumpkin seeds
- Small bowls or cups
- Flash cards
- Marker
What To Do
Write numbers from 1 to 10 (or higher, depending on your child’s ability) on separate flash cards
Ask your little one to count out the correct number of pumpkin seeds and place them on each flashcard. You can also create simple addition or subtraction problems using the seeds as visual counters.

6. Leaf Art

- Different color crayons
What To Do
- Place your leaf underneath a blank sheet of paper
- Using a crayon with the wrapper removed, gently rub the end of the crayon across the paper where the leaf lies until the details start to show
- Repeat with different colors and different leaves and compare and contrast your artwork
