1. Age Requirements
The clearest difference between VPK vs Pre-K is the age of children who usually attend each. VPK programs are for children who turn 4 years old on or before the 1st September of the school year in Florida. This is the last stage before a child will enter kindergarten.
Pre-K programs usually welcome children between the ages of 2 and 4 years old. The Pre-K classroom is developmentally perfect for these ages because it provides these little ones with the space to grow in confidence while getting used to the structure a classroom environment brings. At age 4, children are more classroom ‘ready’.
2. Cost
Funding is unique between VPK programs and Pre-K. Unlike private preschool programs, in Florida, VPK programs are funded by the state and completely free for all eligible children. That means that as long as your child is four years old on or before September 1st of that year, their VPK education is provided at no cost to you. There are no family income limits or financial restrictions to qualify, and you can apply online through the Florida Early Learning Family Portal. Parents simply need to register their child before enrolling in an approved VPK provider like Parkland Children’s Academy.
Keep in mind that enrollment for a VPK program starts in March, and the only requirement you would need to submit with your enrollment is a Certificate of Eligibility, which you can get from the Office of Early Learning either online or in-person.
3. What Children Learn at VPK vs Pre-K
